T.N.H.

Thich Nhat Hanh, Vietnamese Zen master, poet and peace activist, was born in Vietnam in 1926 and ordained as a Buddhist monk at the age of 16. He has worked tirelessly for peace throughout the Vietnam war and has continued to do so ever since.

The Peace Manifesto presents the United Nations declaration of the decade 2001 to 2010 as the International Decade for a cutlure of Peace and Non-violence for the Children of the World. Thich Nhat Hanh helped draft Manifesto 2000 and the goal is to gather 100 million signatures by the end of the year. Signers to date include Thich Nhat Hanh; Mr Pham Van Khai, Prime Minister of Vietnam; Jacque Chriac, President of France; Tony Blair, British Prime Minister; Ebud Barak, Prime Minister of Israel; Nelson Mandela, and Coretta Scott King.

Martin Luther King nominated him for the Novel Peace Prize in 1967 and said:

"I am privileged to call him my friend. He is a holy man, for he is humble and devout. He is a scholar of immense intellectual capacity. His ideas for peace, if applied, would build a monument to ecumenism to world brotherhood, to humanity".

Thomas Merton has said of him:

Just the way he opens a door and enters a room demonstrates his understanding. He is a true monk".
Thich Nhat Hanh shows us the connection between personal inner peace and peace on earth"

- said His Holiness the Dalai Lama

When Thich Nhat Hanh speaks, he speaks with voice of the Buddha"

- Sogyal Rinpoche.

He has been living in exile in France for many years, establishing Plum Village, a rural retreat centre in 1982. Here, Western and Vietnamese people live together in harmony and offer a place of healing and spiritual transformation to the many visitors who arrive each year. He is recognised as one of the great spiritual teachers of our time. His teaching is based on conscious breathing and being fully aware of the present moment - the only moment in which we really live and in which peace and joy is possible.

Through the practice of meditation in everyday life and by showing compassion to all living beings, peace becomes possible within ourselves and affects everyone we touch.

He has written many books including : "The Miracle of Mindfulness", "Being Peace", "Living Buddha, Living Christ", "Peace is Every Step", and "Going Home: Jesus and Buddha are Brothers"
